Kwara gov mourns death of army major killed in ambush in Niger

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has expressed condolences to the Nigerian Army and the people of Eruku in the state’s Ekiti Local Government Area over the death of Major Segun Oni in a recent anti-banditry operation in Niger State.

Oni, a well-decorated and forthright army officer, was killed alongside other soldiers on August 13, 2023, while leading troops on a military operation to eradicate banditry in parts of Niger State.

He was Platoon Commander 72 Special Forces Battalion, Company Second in Command Armed Forces Special Forces Battalion, and Company Second in Command Defence Headquarters Special Operations Forces Battalion at various times.

He received his military education in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the United States, Belarus, and South Africa.

For his excellence, discipline, and hard work, he was awarded the River Niger Star, the Golden Jubilee Medal, the Centenary Medal, and the General Operations Medal.

On Sunday, Rafiu Ajakaye, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, issued a statement saying, “The Governor expresses his heartfelt condolences to the gallant officer’s family, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigerian Defence Headquarters as a whole.” His death is a huge loss for the country as a whole, and especially for Kwara State.

“The Governor prays to God to rest his soul and comfort his family and all who mourn him,” the statement continued.
