Since Sunday, students and alumni of the university have expressed their displeasure with the alleged move to regulate campus dressing.
Some students and alumni gathered on X on Sunday night during a space to discuss the matter, with many of them opposing the move.
The university’s Students’ Union leadership also spoke out against the proposal of a dress code for students in a statement issued late Sunday.
“As a union, we disagree with the management’s plan to regulate students’ mode of dress, which is a violation of their rights to free expression guaranteed by all known laws.”
“We must state unequivocally that the university campus is not a prison and that the use of uniform is truly backward and archaic as it does not contribute in any way to the learning process,” the statement partly read, signed by the union’s President, Secretary-General, and PRO, Abbas Ojo, Opeyemi Akinboni, and Omisore Elijah, respectively.

In an interview with our correspondent on Monday, the union’s Sec Gen, Akinboni, confirmed that the union had received a memo from the university.
The memo, dated August 8, 2023, and copied to the campus’s student and staff unions, was titled “Review of the Code of Conduct for the University Community and Other Policies in the University.” The unions were encouraged to provide feedback to the university’s Directorate of Legal Services.
