The Federal Government has been urged to provide historical names to Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones by the Foundation for Peace Professionals, popularly known as PeacePro.

According to the group’s Executive Director, Mr. Abdulrazaq Hamzat, the designation of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones as simply North West, South West, North East, South East, and North Central has no political significance, necessitating the adoption of a more politically aware strategy to end regional agitation.

In order to accurately reflect the preferences and ambitions of the populace, the Federal Government, in Hamzat’s opinion, should name the six zones.

“People in different regions of Nigeria refer to themselves by particular names and descriptors; eluding such political identities will inevitably make them feel entitled to such identities.

For this reason, Hamzat explained, “non-state actors simply summon those identities, for which people have affinity and connections, to mobilize them in their pursuit of significance.

For this reason, he suggested renaming the regions of the South West as Oduduwa, the North West as Arewa, the South East as Biafra, the North East as Kanem Borno, the South-South as Niger Delta, and the North Central as Middle Belt.

According to Hamzat, the names of these regions have political ramifications because non-state actors frequently use them as rallying points to sow discord among the populace in an effort to garner support for their activities. By formally adopting these names, they are automatically stripped of existing and historical concepts to sow discord among the populace by mobilizing unsuspecting members of the public for their divisive activities.
