US military appeals public to help find missing fighter jet

The US military has asked the public for help in locating a missing F-35 fighter jet after the pilot was ejected from the plane.

The fighter plane went missing on Sunday afternoon while flying over the southern state of South Carolina, according to reports.

The pilot, who has not been identified, successfully ejected and parachuted. According to the BBC, he is in a stable condition in the hospital.

Joint Base Charleston in the United States made the appeal via a post on its verified X account.
“We’re working with @MCASBeaufortSC (Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort) to locate an F-35 that was involved in an incident this afternoon,” they said. The pilot safely ejected. Please contact the Base Defence Operations Centre at 843-963-3600 if you have any information that could assist our recovery teams in locating the F-35.”

Based on the jet’s last known location, the search is centred north of JB Charleston, around Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion. The search is being conducted in collaboration with federal aviation officials.

The F-35 is allegedly one of the world’s largest and most expensive weapons programmes of its kind.
