  • Supporters of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano have been cautioned by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) not to engage in “wild celebrations” following the ruling on Wednesday by the governorship election complaints tribunal.

Sector commander Ibrahim Sallau-Abdullahi issued a statement saying, “Supporters should resist the temptation of wild celebrations during and after tribunal judgement, especially with vehicles or causing any form of obstruction on the roads.”

“Reckless revelries have the potential to violate traffic laws and cause obstructions on highways. We will not tolerate any kind of road traffic collision, as those who do so will be held fully accountable by the law,” he continued.

According to Mr. Sallau-Abdullahi, during and after the tribunal verdict, FRSC employees and representatives of other security agencies would not tolerate careless driving, route violations, driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, careless parking, overloading, speeding, or driving by minors.

Drivers are instructed by Mr. Sallau-Abdullahi to abide carefully by traffic laws and regulations.

The APC’s case, which contests Governor Abba Yusuf of the NNPP’s victory in the March 18 gubernatorial election, is scheduled for a tribunal ruling at any moment.

In a letter given on Monday to the attorneys defending the parties in the case, the tribunal stated the date of the verdict. Weeks after attorneys presented their closing arguments on behalf of their clients on August 21, the announcement was made.

The APC’s candidate, Nasir Gawuna, received 890,705 votes, while the NNPP received 1,019,602 votes, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Consequently, the NNPP candidate prevailed by a margin of 128,897 votes.

The APC, not happy with the results announced by the electoral board, petitioned the tribunal in order to contest them.

Both inside and outside the state have taken notice of the petition, in part because it is a proxy conflict between opposing political heavyweights in the state whose influence reaches all the way to the federal level.

Due to the governor’s lack of membership in the NNPP before to the election, the petitioner pleaded for the NNPP governorship candidate to be declared null and void.

The APC requested that the tribunal proclaim its candidate the victor, given they received the most votes. Alternatively, as the lead margin is smaller than the votes that were canceled, the tribunal ought to declare the governor’s race to be undecided.

The respondents have requested that the APC petition be dismissed by the tribunal due to its lack of merit.

The APC’s arguments, according to NNPP, are all essentially flawed, incompetent, and worthless. The NNPP had contended that the APC’s petition should be deemed illegal in the first place because no court with the authority to decide on a petition in which the front-runner (the candidate for governor) is not included should have jurisdiction to rule on it.
