Desmond Akawor, the Peoples Democratic Party chairman in Rivers State, has tendered his resignation.
Just a few hours after President Bola Tinubu appointed him Federal Commissioner—representing Rivers State in the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission—his resignation letter appeared on Friday.
In a November 22, 2023 letter to PDP acting National Chairman Ambassador Umaru Damagun, Akawor stated that his resignation was related to his appointment.
He mentioned that Aaron Chukwuemeka, his deputy, has since taken over for him.
“I have been nominated as a federal commissioner representing Rivers State for a Federal appointment to the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission,” the letter stated.
I have embraced this chance to serve our nation, which I view as a national service, after conferring with my leaders and family.
“Therefore, I am thankful for the chance to have led the PDP at the state level from 2020 to 2023, and particularly thankful for your support and the support of the national body during my tenure. As a result, I have resigned my position as the Rivers State party chairman of our great party, the PDP, and immediately turned over all duties to the Deputy Party Chairman, Aaron Chukwuemeka, who has commenced action in this stead.”Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, has our sincere gratitude for his thoughtfulness and for considering me deserving of this position.
“I am devoted to our party’s principles at all times and will be there to lead, provide, and assist with any party activity whenever needed.”

In anticipation of Senate approval, Tinubu named Akawor, a representative of Rivers State, as a Federal Commissioner to the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission on Thursday.
Asondu Temple, the immediate past RMAFC Federal Commissioner from Rivers State, tragically passed away earlier this month, which led to Akawor’s appointment, according to a statement signed by the President’s Special Advisor on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.
“President Tinubu approves appointment of RMAFC Federal Commissioner,” read the announcement.
Prior to being appointed, Akawor held positions as CEO of the Niger Delta River Basin Development Authority, Executive Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (Engineering & Technical Services), Minister of State of the Federal Capital Territory, Sole Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt Development Authority, and Nigerian Ambassador to South Korea.
In order to “deploy his robust experience across tiers of government toward the comprehensive reformation of processes that will ensure the most efficient and productive utilization of allocations to all three tiers of government in Nigeria,” the President assigned the new Federal Commissioner this responsibility.
