The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expressed disapproval yesterday for President Bola Tinubu, the current APC candidate, performing his campaign song in the National Assembly’s sacred chamber when the budget estimate for 2024 was being presented to the legislature.
According to the PDP, President Tinubu and his advisors launched an incredibly sacrilegious and unforgivable attack on the constitutional sovereignty and sensitivity of the Nigerian people, as represented by the National Assembly.
The government’s security band’s blatant performance of Tinubu’s campaign song during National Assembly proceedings, according to PDP national publicity secretary Hon. Debo Ologunagba, further validated “the apprehensions by Nigerians of creeping totalitarianism and fiefdom where an individual is being elevated as a Sovereign in clear undermining of the Legislature and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).”
According to Ologunagba, the episode confirms the PDP’s worries, which have been voiced on multiple occasions. The PDP most recently warned on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, that the Tinubu-led APC administration is dangerously bringing the country closer to authoritarianism and cronyism.
The Nigerian people’s collective sovereignty is symbolized by the National Assembly, which cannot be taken by or ceded to any one person or group under any pretense or condition.

“In addition, the PDP is horrified by President Tinubu’s portrayal of Nigerians in his budget presentation as the “ordinary people out there”; this comment further reveals the APC administration’s contempt and complete indifference to the sensitivity of Nigerians in the development of policies, programs, and execution.
This presumably explains why President Tinubu’s proposed budget for 2024 mainly catered to the opulent tastes of the wealthy and powerful members of the APC and the Presidency, with no commensurately beneficial plan for the welfare of other Nigerians.
Nigerians are urged by our party to remain vigilant and safeguard their democracy by opposing the APC administration’s authoritarian inclinations.
In a statement, Ologunagba stated, “We must not allow any act that is capable of drifting our nation to unconstitutional tendencies as being displayed by the APC. Nigeria is a democratic nation governed by the Constitution and the Rule of Law.”
