A boat accident that happened in Rivers State on Tuesday night is reported to have claimed the lives of at least 20 people.
It was discovered that two passenger boats traveling toward Bonny, a nearby coastal council area, capsized on the Andoni waterways in the Andoni Local Government Area of the State.
In a statement confirming the event, Andoni LGA chairman Erastus Awortu expressed profound amazement and offered his condolences to the victims’ families and communities.
Part of the statement says, “On Tuesday, January 9, 2024, within the Andoni waterways, we received with startling shock and deep anguish a worrisome report that approximately 20 people from Andoni are thought dead in a boat mishap involving two Andoni/Bonny-bound boats.
“As soon as we learned of the tragic event, we sent out a team to assist the first responders in their rescue effort at the spot, hoping to turn things around.
“We are keeping a close eye on the situation in order to provide additional support, particularly to provide the necessary medical care to the survivors and retrieve the deceased’s remains from the sea.”
