The PDP’s Dauda Lawal was declared Zamfara governor by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court overturned the Court of Appeal Abuja’s March 18, 2023 governorship election inconclusive ruling and ordered a re-run in three local government districts.

November saw the appeal court nullify Lawal’s election.

He defeated APC incumbent Bello Matawalle in the March 18 governorship election.

Lawal received 377,726 votes and Matawalle 311,976.

The APC candidate, now a Minister of State for Defence, accused INEC of undermining his election victory by omitting LGA results.

On September 18, the Zamfara Election Petitions Tribunal rejected Matawalle’s plea.

Lawal won, and the tribunal fined Matawalle and the APC N500,000.

Unsatisfied, Matawalle appealed the lower court’s verdict to the Abuja Court of Appeal.

Matawalle received relief at the appellate court when Justice Oyebisi Folayemi’s three-member panel overturned INEC’s governorship election result.

Justice Sybil Nwaka directed INEC to hold new elections in three LGAs where elections had not been held or polling unit results were not counted.

The governor sought redress at the Supreme Court.
