Tony Okocha, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) Caretaker Committee in Rivers State, has urged Siminalayi Fubara, the state governor, to hold local government elections in accordance with the constitution.

The term of the current LGA chairman is set to expire in a few months, according to Okocha, who made the call while speaking to journalists following a visit to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, or RSIEC, by members of the Inter Party Advisory Committee, or IPAC, in the state on Thursday.

The APC is prepared to run in the LGA poll, he declared.

Okocha stated, “Given that the constitution permits elections to be held after a specific amount of time, I felt that I should also take this opportunity to call on the Rivers State Government to add to the calls that we have made for an election to be performed.

The current council members’ terms are coming to an end in a few months, therefore the procedure needs to be set up because the legislation also stipulates that parties must have a decent amount of time to prepare for the election.

Additionally, we would like to take this chance to inform the governor that things are not going as usual.

Indeed, the usage of caretaker arrangements in municipal governments has been declared abnormal by the Supreme Court.

“This time, we will not boycott the elections; it was a mistake that was made in the past and it will never happen again.”

He conveyed trust in the Rivers State High Court retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, who is leading the RSIEC.
