Walid Regragui, the coach of Morocco, has been fined $5,000 and suspended for four games by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The 48-year-old missed Morocco’s last Group F match against Zambia at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals on Wednesday, and if the Moroccan football federation’s (RMFF) appeal is successful, he will also miss his team’s Round of 16 match against South Africa on Tuesday. Two of his ban’s matches have been suspended for a year.

Following Morocco’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo on Sunday, there were post-match events that led to the fines.

The RMFF said in a statement that Coach Regragui did not transgress the principles of fair play and that the CAF’s decision was inexplicable.

Following the occurrences, the CAF disciplinary board also penalized the RMFF and the football association of DR Congo $20,000 apiece; however, it did not provide a public explanation for its rulings.

In addition, the RMFF was fined $10,000 for the use of smoke bombs by Moroccan fans during the game; however, half of that sum is deferred.
