To its citizens living in South Africa, the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria has issued an advisory.

An advisory released on Monday made reference to remarks made by some South Africans, who were leading up to the AFCON semi-final, that were “potentially inflammatory” regarding Nigerians residing in the nation.

In light of this, the Pretoria, South Africa-based High Commission issued a warning to Nigerians to exercise caution and good behavior prior to, during, and following the game.

The 2024 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final between the Super Eagles and the Bafana Bafana on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, is expected to have a significant impact on the potentially incendiary remarks made online by some South African citizens against Nigerians residing in the host country, according to a statement issued by the Nigeria High Commission in Pretoria.

“Most of the comments consist of veiled threats against Nigerians cooking jollof rice before the match,” it continued, and “showing pepper to Nigerians if the Bafana Bafana lose to the Super Eagles.”

“With that in mind, the Nigerian community is hereby advised by the High Commission to exercise caution in what they say, to watch the game elsewhere if possible—especially in public—and to avoid causing commotion or agitation in the event that the Super Eagles win.

Furthermore, before, during, and after the game, Nigerians should uphold the moral character for which they are renowned and obey the law. If provocation occurs, it is best to report it to the relevant authorities rather than responding in kind.
