The manager of Paragon Clinics and Imaging Diagnosis, a private medical institution situated along Stadium Road in Port Harcourt, the state capital, has been verified to have been arrested by the Rivers State Police Command.

Following the report of the death of Rebekah Sekidika, a first-class Micro Biology graduate from Benson Idahosa University, Benin City, Edo State, at the hospital, the police stated the arrest was a part of an investigation.

On February 2, 2024, Sampson Sekidika, the deceased’s father, said that his daughter had passed away during a hospital treatment.

Sekidika blamed the people who carried out the surgery on his daughter, 24, claiming that she wasn’t in need of surgery.

He wrote that he had driven Rebekah to the facility and that he had emphasized that she was well and had no medical issues, but that she needed to send an SMS when her period was delayed before leaving on a trip abroad.

She had complained about not seeing her menstruation in a while. She therefore needed to understand why. During the clinical visit, she had various tests, one of which was a pregnancy test, the results of which were all negative.

To be sure, though, they advised her to consult a specialist. The day of the appointment, they brought her into the operating room and administered anesthesia for a straightforward operation that didn’t need for surgery, but she died as a result of complications.

“Rebekah was scheduled to go to the UK for her PhD and master’s degree programs. The distressed father said, “Everything was set, flight booked, tuition paid, everything arranged.”

Grace Iringe-Koko, a spokesman for the state police command, informed our correspondent on Sunday that the manager had been arrested.

Iringe-Koko voiced her disappointment that the doctor and the person who gave the anesthesia had not accepted an earlier invitation from the police.

“Yes, I can confirm that the manager has been arrested,” she said. As part of our investigation, we have also invited the doctor and another individual.

“The State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department has been tasked with conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.”

She added that two other people who were detained but were later freed due of their jobs at the institution having nothing to do with the incident.
