Nigerian wrestler, Ashton Mutuwa, says he is not satisfied with his feat at the recent 2023 African Games in Ghana stating that he still has grounds to cover to win a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games still to come in the year, According Sports Extra reports.
Mutuwa made his African Games debut in Ghana afer opting to represent Nigeria despite spending most of his wrestling career in the United States.
The America-based wrestler however, defied odds to win silver at the competition and he went further to book a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after a successful outing in the men’s 125kg freestyle event at the African and Oceania Qualifiers in Alexandria, Egypt in March.
While acknowledging the huge support from his team-mates, coaches and the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Mutuwa hope to join the elite list of athlete who have won the Olympic medals for Nigeria.
“I just wanted to give a shout out to Nigerians for the support I’ve received so far,” Mutuwa said in a statement made available to our correspondent by the Nigeria Wrestling Federation.
“My appreciation to Daniel Igali and the NWF board for allowing me to come and wrestle and represent Nigeria, Daniel Igali helped in coaching and mentoring me to reach this level.
“Also to my coach Victor Kodei and my team-mates Harrison, Stephen, Simeon and Braveman I could not have done this without your support.
“I’m excited I get to be in Paris to represent my country, although the work is not done I hope to bring a medal at the games but I think we’ve accomplished something so far,” he added.
