The Sokoto State Government has sought the federal government’s intervention following the death of three children in Isa LGA from a strange illness.
The Deputy Governor, Engineer Idris Gobir, while hosting the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate; and the CEO of Global Alliance Vaccine Initiative (GAVI), Dr Sania Nishtar; at the weekend, said 127 children had been affected by the disease, prompting an immediate action from the state government.
While noting that a team of experts had been dispatched to investigate the situation, he said, “We, therefore, seek the intervention of the federal government to curtail the disease.”
Gobir reiterated the state’s dedication to enhancing immunisation coverage and primary healthcare services, saying the state was actively collaborating with partners to address the issues and implement federal initiatives for polio eradication.
Dr Larai Aliyu Tambuwal, the Executive Secretary of the Sokoto State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, confirmed the three fatalities linked to the outbreak.
Professor Pate and Dr Nishtar expressed the need for enhanced collaboration to bolster immunisation activities in Sokoto State, emphasising the importance of engaging stakeholders to improve coverage and combat health challenges effectively.
