Marvellous Omobayo, the newly inaugurated Deputy Governor of Edo State, has promised to ensure the victory of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s anointed candidate in the gubernatorial election slated for September.

This is coming on the back of the impeachment of the former Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, amidst a tense political atmosphere as the state prepares for a transition of power.

Omobayo, who had contested a House of Representatives seat under the Labour Party during the 2023 general elections, was recently sworn in by Edo Chief Judge, Daniel Okungbowa.

His appointment is seen as a strategic move by Governor Obaseki, who is in the final year of his second term and cannot seek re-election.

During a recent interview concerning the coming September poll, Omobayo remarked, “Six months is a very short time. If you consider data, there could be a bridge. I’m not expecting so much because there’s already a plan on the ground. I inherited the plan.”

He added that his focus was to assist Governor Obaseki in concluding his term successfully and to provide crucial support—both technical and political—to bolster the campaign of the PDP governorship candidate, Ighodaloh.

He said, “My own intention is to assist the governor to finish very well and to make one or two inputs, technically or politically, that’s inputs to add to the votes that we envisage in September.”
