Abia Assembly suspends Deputy Speaker, eight other people

Chief Ifeanyi Uchendu, Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, and eight other members have been suspended.

Members were suspended during Tuesday’s plenary, which was presided over by the embattled Speaker, Chinedum Orji.

It was previously reported that Orji was impeached by 18 of the House’s 24 members on Tuesday.

The police took over the Assembly premises prior to the reported impeachment of Orji. It was soon announced that the Speaker had been impeached.

However, Orji reappeared a few hours later and presided over the House plenary.

It was discovered that 9 members attended the meeting.

According to a source close to the Speaker, “Orji remains the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly.” Eleven people are with him. As you can see, nine of them attended the meeting, while two took permission to leave the country.”

Uchendu was suspended along with Rt Hon Chikwendu Kalu, Hon Chukwudi Apugo, Hon Aaron Uzodike, Hon Chukwu Chijioke, Hon Thomas Nkoro, Hon Mike Ukoha, Obinna Ichita, and Hon Okey Igwe during the sitting.

The House stated that the suspension would be effective immediately and without pay.
