Chief Afe Babalola, a legal luminary, has denounced the deployment of high court justices at the nation’s election petition tribunal.
The legal juggernaut spoke at “the 60 Years at the Bar,” which took place in Alfa Belgore Hall at Afe Babalola University in Ado-Ekiti, ABUAD.
Chief Babalola noted that for a number of recent months, the courts had been unable to convene and make decisions on the matters that were before them. He claimed that the Nigerian judiciary required a complete revamp.
“We need a new constitution to enable rapid development by allowing each component to grow independently.”
In his remarks at the event, Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese, urged the federal government to steer clear of sentiments as Nigeria moves toward democracy.
Bishop Kukah stated that in order to sustain democratic principles, unselfish service was necessary and should not be motivated by feeling in order to promote growth.
The Future of Constitutional Democracy in Nigeria: The Need for a New Constitutional Order was the topic of Kukah’s talk.
The clergyman asserted that “most politicians have relatively limited growth in their home town,” which, in his opinion, does not project democracy.
