The Akwa Ibom Police Command has announced the arrest of a lawyer, Ekere Sunday Ebong, following the release of a viral video depicting him physically beating his wife.
SP Odiko MacDon, the state Police Public Relations Officer, verified this in a statement issued on Monday.
According to MacDon, the suspect was apprehended on the orders of the state Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi.
“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested one Barrister Ekere Sunday Ebong (55 years) of Plot 40 L Line Ewet Housing Estate,” according to the announcement.
“In a video that went viral, the suspect assaulted his wife and dehumanised her, leading to various grievous injuries.
“He has a long history of committing violent acts against his wife.”
“As an agency tasked with protecting lives and property as well as maintaining law and order, we cannot allow Barrister Ebong to continue this flagrant violation of human rights.”
To stop murder and the collapse of law and order, Commissioner of Police CP Olatoye Durosinmi thus issued an order for the suspect’s arrest.
The CP has urged family members to try to settle disagreements peacefully rather than using violence as a means of retaliation, and it has cautioned those who commit violent crimes in the state to stop immediately.
“Barr.” When the inquiry is over on Sunday, Ebong will have his day in court.
