In order to succeed Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the current National Chairman of the party, the Coalition of North-Central Leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress has endorsed Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, the former governor of Kano State.
APC chairmen from seven North-West states similarly approved the 73-year-old lawmaker during a meeting in Kaduna just two days prior to the current development.
There are conflicting reactions among party members and supporters of the ruling party to President Bola Tinubu and the APC governors allegedly endorsing Ganduje as their chosen candidate.
According to the APC’s zoning system, some party chieftains believed the next national chairman should come from Nasarawa State; however, others supported the selection of the former Kano governor.
While the present zoning mechanism gives the office to their zone, the APC North-Central leaders have agreed to give Ganduje the position of national chairman instead, according to Okpokwu Ogenyi, the coalition’s convener, in a statement to press on Thursday in Abuja.
He asserted: “We, the people of North Central, have held the national chairperson positions of all of the country’s ruling parties and have performed admirably in terms of party administration. We are pleased to report that a chairman from the zone guided the party to victory in the most recent residential election.
“Today, our father, the former National Chairman of the APC, resigned from his job, leaving the position open. As you may be aware, there is never a time of incompetence in government; therefore, our party needs to be led by a capable hand.
We firmly support Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje serving as the National Chairman of our wonderful Party, the APC, on this point. Party animal Abdullahi Ganduje has made a name for himself as a highly esteemed thinker.
“As North Central Youth, you could be inclined to wonder why we shouldn’t demand that the post be kept in the zone. In actuality, we have made our fair share of contributions and hope that other zones will also get the chance to get involved in the Party’s leadership. When it comes to national interest, we in the North Central region are far beyond petty matters, greed, and selfishness.
