A planned gathering by certain Nigerians has been discouraged by the US branch of the All Progressives Congress in advance of President Bola Tinubu’s visit to the UN General Assembly on September 20.
At the high-level UNGA General Debate’s 78th Session, which will take place at the UN’s New York headquarters, Tinubu is anticipated to speak.
According to the list of speakers provided by the Office of the General Assembly President, he will be the fifth African head of state to address the meeting on day one.
However, there are conflicting reactions to the President’s proposed visit, with some Nigerians in the Diaspora declaring they will oppose him going.
Adesegun Labinjo, a suspended party member, is supposedly in charge of organizing the event, according to a statement released on Tuesday by the chairman of the APC’s US chapter, Prof. Tai Balofin.
While noting that the issue has been reported to the appropriate authorities, Balofin urged restraint and issued a caution against harming the nation’s reputation abroad.
A rally is scheduled to take place during President Tinubu’s visit to the United Nations, according to information that has lately come to our attention. This event is intended as a direct response to a gathering that Mr. Labinjo, a suspended person claiming to be the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, has scheduled for September 20, 2023.
“The fallout from Mr. Labinjo’s protest has sparked worries about future disruption and turmoil from the Obidients who intend to damage the president’s name. We want to let the public and any other interested parties know that we have acted quickly to alert the proper authorities about this unneeded and potentially disruptive proposal.
“Prof. Tai Balofin, the chairman of the APC USA, has issued a strong warning to anyone considering disrupting any side activities or President Tinubu’s visit. He stresses that anyone who breaks the law will be detained and prosecuted to the greatest extent of the law.
The ideals of freedom of expression and association, which are essential to a democratic society, are fully acknowledged and respected by us. However, we admonish all citizens to exercise these rights sensibly and without harming our President’s standing.
“It’s vital to keep in mind that the conclusion of the election and the related legal matters has been resolved, and it’s now time to accept it gracefully. The impending elections in 2027 will present another opportunity for political involvement, and people are urged to do so legally.
