As strange illness claims 10 lives in Kaduna, gov launches investigation

A probe into the deaths of 10 children in some communities in Kafanchan, in the state’s Jema’a Local Government Area, has been ordered by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani.

Just then, the Kaduna State Ministry of Health confirmed an outbreak of the deadly disease diphtheria in a few Kafanchan communities.

The governor’s chief press secretary, Muhammad Shehu, said that the order was issued following several reports of residents in Takau Ward, Kafanchan A and Kafanchan B wards displaying symptoms such as breathing difficulties, high fevers, coughs, generalized body weakness, sore throats, and neck swelling.

His Excellency, Senator Uba Sani, Governor of Kaduna State, immediately ordered the Kaduna State Ministry of Health to send an emergency team to investigate these cases after learning about the tragic loss of life in the affected communities.

Part of the statement stated, “A preliminary report from the ministry revealed that the outbreak of diphtheria in Kafanchan had its first recorded case at the start of July 2023.”

While praising the health officials for their quick response to the health emergency, the governor urged them to keep working hard to see that the disease was contained and then eventually eradicated.

Additionally, he advised locals to take precautions to stop the disease from spreading and to safeguard their communities by frequently washing their hands with soap and water, avoiding close contact with sick people, covering their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing, and skipping work or school when they were ill.
