Nine members of a Bauchi local vigilance group known as “Yan Ba Beli” were killed by gunmen.
The attack occurred in Gamji village while vigilantes were hunting bandits who had been terrorising communities in the state’s Ningi Loval Government Area.
The gunmen were said to have set up an ambush for the vigilantes, killing nine of them and injuring others.
According to a member of the group who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the incident occurred late Sunday evening while members of Yan Ba Beli were climbing the rocks around Gamji village in search of the bandits.
He went on to explain, “As soon we entered into the ambush, the bandits opened fire with superior weapons and overpowered the Yan Ba Beli killing nine of us instantly and injuring others.”

The incident was confirmed by the Caretaker Chairman of Ningi LGA, Ibrahim Mato, who condemned it and assured that the government would continue to do everything possible to protect citizens’ lives and property in the area.
Meanwhile, according to our correspondent, the bodies of the nine corpses were recovered on Monday and buried the same day at the scene of the incident in accordance with Islamic rites.
