Breaking: ECOWAS Parliament Hold Emergency Session over Niger Coup

The recent military coup in the Republic of Niger will be discussed at a virtual meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) parliament on Saturday, August 12.

The meeting will start at 10 a.m. local time in Abuja, Nigeria, according to sources. Attendance is anticipated from all 115 members of parliament.

The parliament will consider potential measures to stop certain member states, including Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and most recently, the Republic of Niger, from routinely violating the ECOWAS constitution’s legal restrictions.

According to the parliament’s statement:

“The Economic Community of West African States Parliament (ECOWAS Parliament) will hold an Extra-Ordinary Session to thoroughly review the recent political developments in the Republic of Niger.The session, which will take place online, is set for Saturday, August 12, 2023, at 10 a.m. (local time, Abuja).

“Several ECOWAS Member States were inspired to take bold action in order to achieve peace and security via the development of democracy and good governance by the early 1990s in the light of the enormous changes that occurred in the politico-economic spectrum of the world in the late 1980s.

“As a result, an important phase in the political evolution of the sub-region was marked in 2001 by the entry into force of the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance. For the establishment of multi-Party democracies, military regimes and one-party systems buckled.
