Speaker of the pro-Wike faction of Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, on Thursday raised alarm that Governor Similanayi Fubara was plotting to demolish the official quarters of the lawmakers.

Daily Trust had reported that Fubara visited the quarters located at GRA, Port Harcourt, on Thursday.

But speaking to journalists after the governor’s visit, Amaehwule said Fubara’s latest plot is to pull down the recently built Rivers State House of Assembly quarters.

Amaehwule said tmembers of the Assembly were stunned when the governor stormed the quarters.

He stated that Nigerians were watching day-by-day as the Governor, who is supposed to uphold the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and extant laws of the State is now the “chief breaker of the law”.

Amaewhule said the House of Assembly quarters is one of the best in Nigeria and was built by Nyesom Wike, the immediate past Governor of Rivers, saying it was commissioned by the Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, now Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.

He expressed disappointment in what he described as the Governor’s undue interference, stating that the Rivers State House of Assembly quarters was built for members of the House of Assembly, not for the Executive arm.

“We are ashamed to have a Governor who has no respect for our Constitution, laws, and democracy. Indeed, our Governor is an assault to our democracy,” Amaewhule said.

He alleged that the governor mobilized thugs who jumped through the fence and broke the back gate.

Amaewhule stated that while other governors were looking for ways to improve the well-being of their people, Fubara is busy looking for structures to demolish.

The speaker said members of the 10th Rivers Assembly were not afraid and would continue to make laws for the good governance of the state.

He said the governor has no power over the legislature as the House of Assembly is a creation of the Constitution.

The crisis rocking Rivers took a new dimension two days ago when Chief Tony Okocha, Caretaker Committee Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), asked the pro-Wike lawmakers to impeach Fubara.

Twenty-four hours after the call which was supported by the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Rivers chapter, lawmakers loyal to Fubara, elected a chairman, who said they were ready for legislative business.
