The Code of Conduct Bureau has issued a warning to Federal Capital Territory Administration employees, stating that failing to rigorously abide by the Code of Conduct governing public service will result in punishment.

At a one-day awareness campaign in Abuja on Thursday, Suleiman Usman, state director for the CCB in the FCT, gave the warning.

Given that government offices are held in trust on behalf of the people, he entrusted the staff with making sure that their assets were promptly and accurately declared for the sake of transparency and accountability.

Usman added that many public employees still lack a basic understanding of some of the knowledge and behaviors required for their positions, which leads them to unintentionally normalize systemic illegalities.

He also denounced the practice of public employees working outside of regular business hours and issued a warning that the bureau would take action against any employee who was accused of doing so after filing a complaint and being subject to an investigation by the committee of the Bureau.

“We are here to raise awareness of the significance of asset declaration among the FCT Administration’s public personnel and to guarantee complete compliance. In order for them to understand their obligations and the rules that govern public officers, we also educated them on the code of conduct.

In order to prevent federal workers from directly managing private firms, the Bureau has a committee that conducts investigations and takes the required action, the official said.

Speaking at the event as well, Dr. Jummai Ahmadu, acting director of FCTA’s Reform Coordination and Service Improvement Division, noted that the Bureau regularly conducts awareness campaigns across the nation to reaffirm the importance of civil servants declaring their assets every four years.

She stated that the FCT Administration will make conscious efforts to make sure that individuals are aware of what is required of them by providing them with comprehensive instructions on how to register their assets.
