The youth team of Enyimba are the latest Nigerian side to be involved in a road accident.

There has been a spate of road mishaps involving Nigerian sports teams in recent weeks, and the youth side of the eight-time Nigeria Professional Football League champions are the newest victims.

“Enyimba FC can confirm that the team bus conveying its youth side was today involved in a road accident on its way from a tournament in Imo State,” the club said in an official statement on Thursday.

Fortunately, there were no deaths reported although there were injuries.

Enyimba did not give details of the number of players and officials hurt in the accident or the severity of their injuries.

“Players and staff who sustained injuries in the crash are currently receiving medical treatment,” the statement added.

Several NPFL clubs, including Wikki Tourists, MFM and Adamawa United, have either had their buses catch fire, had their players attacked by bandits or crashed their vehicles in the course of long road trips in recent times.

Women’s league team FC Robo of Lagos also got attacked in Ijebu-Ode by highway robbers days ago while travelling for a match in Delta State.

The Sokoto State basketball team lost their coach to a road accident on Monday when their bus collided with a truck while the team headed back home from neighbouring Kebbi.

The incessant road incidents are a direct reflection of the country at the moment, with road travel made extremely dangerous due to bad roads and high criminal activity.
