Lance Corporal Philomena Nnamoko, a female soldier assigned to Ilese Sappers Barracks, Division 2, Ogun State, claimed during her interview on January 28, 2024, that she had been subjected to bullying and harassment by her senior colleagues for refusing to accede to their advances. She also claimed to have been beaten and sent to the Yaba Psychiatric Hospital.
During the interview, Philomena talked about being approached sexually by some of her superiors. She also claimed to have written multiple letters asking to be released from the army voluntarily, but that requests had been denied.
Emmanuel Brown, the soldier’s only child, confirmed on Monday night that he had learned about his mother’s assault on Sunday night and that she had been beaten before being taken to a mental health facility.
“I received the information about ten o’clock at night, and I hurried to the Medical Reception Station within the barracks,” he stated. She was not breathing when I arrived. When she came to, she described how they had beaten her. She has bruises all over her body, which saddens me and makes me feel terrible from stress. She even puked while we were there, so I had to clean her up and wrap her in clothes because she was getting cold.

“This morning, Monday, I arrived at the MRS and saw that she had been taken to the Yaba Psychiatric Hospital.” I didn’t understand what had happened to her to make her need to be admitted to a mental health facility.
In line with Brown’s story, Philomena’s attorney, Kayode Oshiyemi, informed our correspondent that his client had been beaten by a senior officer on Monday and claimed the police had made up a mental illness to hide the assault.
“She was attacked in the barracks yesterday (Sunday) by a captain,” he stated. To hide the assault, they made up the story that she suffered from mental health problems. This morning (Monday), they called her into the office and physically abused her. She has been taken to Yaba while we speak, claiming to have a mental illness.
However, she is perfectly stable, and she doesn’t have any issues. Since she has been a client of mine for more than a year, I am confident that she is in good mental health. She frequently described being harassed, beaten, and on the verge of being raped. She displayed no signs of mental illness, indicating that she is mentally stable. She delivered paperwork to my office and provided excellent answers to all of my inquiries. She called me to let me know when she was being harassed.

“They persisted in requesting that she write (discharge) letters, which were not turned in to the proper authorities.”
Philip Edwin, Philomena’s twin brother, also emphasized to our correspondent that his twin sister’s mental health was fine because they were getting along well. “Her son called me today (Monday) and told me what happened to her last night,” the man stated. In the meantime, last Wednesday I spent with Sophia, and we had a great conversation. Even my friends can attest to the fact that she is in good mental health. She doesn’t have any mental health issues.
“I am not happy with how I am feeling. It is horrible. These problems are a result of an issue the Army has with her.
