The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has been urged by the Federal Government to halt its upcoming two-day warning strike.
Simon Lalong, the minister of labour and employment, issued the call on Monday in Abuja.
According to Lalong, the strike would be harmful and would undo the progress the government has already made.
In addition, he requested that the NLC give the new administration some time to get organised and deal with the union’s concerns.
According to Lalong, “it has become necessary to appeal to the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to suspend its intended two-day warning strike, as such action would be detrimental to the gains already being recorded on our path to securing a better future for Nigerian workers and citizens at large.”
Additionally, I would ask that the Nigeria Labour Congress leadership give this government some time to settle in and deal with the local problems comprehensively.

The newly appointed minister stated that the federal government wants to comprehensively address the problems brought up by the NLC leadership in the coming weeks after being briefed on them.
Lalong told the Nigerian workforce, however, that the government would not take them for granted and would continue to pursue policies intended to generate a significant amount of jobs, pointing out that the government could not accomplish this in an environment of industrial discontent.
As a result, I’d like to take this chance to assure Nigerian workers that their government would never take them for granted or fail to value their cooperation and compassion.
We will continue to pursue policies that aim to create a lot of jobs across the board while also examining the immediate difficulties brought on by the government’s actions. We are unable to accomplish this in an environment devoid of industrial calm.
The minister also said that the planned strike had not been reported to the ministry by the NLC as required by law, but that a meeting with labour leaders will be convened on Monday afternoon to prevent the walkout.
