At the Yusuf Maitama Sule University and the Kano University of Science and Technology in Wudil, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has requested additional Tertiary Education Trust Fund intervention projects.
Yusuf made the call while paying a courtesy visit to Sonny Echono, who serves as the Executive Secretary of TETFund, in Abuja. He placed a strong emphasis on the necessity of a robust collaboration between the government of Kano and the fund in order to guarantee improved educational provision.
“The purpose of my visit is to ensure that the Kano government and TETFund continue to work together on projects and other forms of educational assistance to these two universities,” I said as I explained why I was making this trip.
“Of course, the university I succeeded in establishing was the third one in the state, but as far as we are concerned, these two universities are close to our heart,” he said.
He lauded the efforts of TETFund in constructing a variety of infrastructure projects in tertiary institutions all over the country.
The governor made a specific request for TETFund’s assistance in the two universities, specifically in the areas of the provision of additional facilities, training, and retraining of staff, as well as flood control in Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil. TETFund has agreed to provide this assistance.
“To begin, we would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the administration for the intervention programs and projects that are currently being carried out at the two universities.
To be more specific, I am more interested in the development of infrastructure. The reason for this is because if you do not have classrooms, you do not have hostels, you do not have libraries or facilities, then the entire system will fall apart.
Therefore, ensuring the provision of infrastructures is the most important thing that can be done for a university or any other type of institution that provides tertiary education.
“Without the support of TETFund, the majority of universities across the country would not be where they are today in terms of the educational facilities that they offer, if you take a look at them.
“Number two, my primary concern is with the ongoing education and reeducation of the faculty and staff at the various universities. According to the governor, TETFund has been providing assistance in the areas of training and retraining.
In the meantime, the Executive Secretary of the TETFund, Sonny Echono, congratulated Governor Yusuf on his victory in the gubernatorial election held in March 2023. Echono stated that the fund is ready to partner with the government in order to improve the financial situations of tertiary education institutions located within the state.
Echono characterized Kano as a center of learning in addition to a center of commerce because the state is home to more than a dozen educational institutions.
“The TETFund intervenes in three institutions within a state, which are the universities, the polytechnics, and the colleges of education.”
“In order to guarantee that we are able to concentrate our resources and make an impact that is meaningful, the board of Trustees has imposed restrictions on a number of institutions.
Because of this, we do not recommend that states create multiple institutions for the sole purpose of directing TETFund intervention.
It actually enrolls two institutions of the same kind at the same time, and even when we enroll two institutions at the same time, I mean either two universities, two polytechnics, or two colleges of education.
“In order to comply with the provision of our law that discusses the equality of states, and to ensure that we do not give preferential treatment to any one state in particular over the order,” According to what he said, states that have more than one institution actually rotate between them.
