Gunmen allegedly assassinated retired President of the Customary Court of Appeal in Makurdi, Benue State, Justice Margaret Igbetar.

Her son discovered her remains on Thursday at her apartment on Wantor Kwange Street, next the School of Medicine, Benue State University, Gboko Road.

According to a family member, the corpse had begun to decompose by the time it was discovered.

According to the source, a murder case was reported to Makurdi’s “E” Division Police Station.

“Her corpse appears to be rotting at the time it was discovered, implying she was murdered before yesterday (Thursday),” the insider said.

The Divisional Police Officer, Daniel Ezeala, was not immediately available for comment, but a police source confirmed the occurrence.

“Yes, it’s true,” the source stated. Her deceased body was discovered at her house yesterday, Thursday, August 24, 2023, although the corpse was not in good condition, implying that it (death) could not have occurred yesterday (Thursday), but rather the day before yesterday.

“The son is providing vital information that could lead to the arrest of culprits in the incident.”

According to a police source, investigations are underway to determine the cause of death.

When reached, state Police Public Relations Officer SP Catherine Anene stated that she was on her way back to the state and requested more time to investigate the matter.

As of press time, she had not responded to our correspondent.

Late Igbetar was born on October 17, 1950, in Mbape, Shangev-ya, Tsar-Mbaduku, in Benue State’s Vandeikya Local Government Area.

She was married and had seven children, two sons and five daughters.

The deceased was a founding member of the Benue State chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers.
