In preparation for the scheduled September 21 Local Council Polls across the 27 LGAs and 305 INEC registered Wards in the State, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has held successful primaries.

The primaries, described as peaceful by the State Chairman of the Party, Amb.Henry Ifeanyi Eluwa took place in all the 27 LGAs, including the 305 registered INEC Wards in the State on August 3, 2024, in line with ISIEC timetable.

The exercise, which was conducted in consensus, had all the aspirants returned unopposed.

Only three women would be contesting for the councillorship seats.

The election was observed by the Head of Election and party monitoring team from Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC), Kingsley Chidi Ubah.

Ubah adjudged the exercise as being very transparent and wonderful.

“Although the candidates were elected via consensus, ISIEC is satisfied with the process and democratic resolution of SDP. I charge the party to as well follow ISIEC rules in the main LG Polls,” he said.

Admonishing party faithful earlier, the leader and governorship candidate of the party during the 2023 election in the State, Prince Bright Obinna Ekwebelem, said the party believed solidly in good governance, internal democracy and humanity, positing that the party will support any serious candidate to be able to win the election.

“SDP is going to take over local government administration in Imo State because it believes in human dignity, development and progress”, Ekwebelem said.

Expressing happiness over the concluded exercise, the State Chairman of the party, Eluwa, affirmed that the primary elections took place in all the 27 LGAs and all 305 INEC registered Wards in the state.

“It was on consensus. All aspirants were returned unopposed as the primary elections for both chairmanship and councillorship seats ended successfully.

“Collation of results was also carried out fairly by the party in Owerri on the same day,” he said.

He further stated that the party was ready to win majority seats in the council elections.

“We will win the elections because we want to internalize democracy and good governance at the grassroots so that rural dwellers will enjoy life fully and comfortably,” the Chairman added.

While thanking the Governor for okaying the LG Elections in the State, Eluwa called on ISIEC to uphold its words by conducting free, fair and peaceful council elections.
