The Independent National Electoral Commission declared on Monday that it has not received any financial assistance from foreign aid organizations to hold the general election in 2023.
At a meeting with civil society organizations regarding the review of the general election in 2023, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of INEC, disclosed this.
In order to dispel the notion that the commission got substantial quantities of money from development partners for the election, Yakubu provided the clarification.
Yakubu clarified that the federal government provided the commission with solely financial support.

“However, it is vital to grasp this occasion to correct the idea in some quarters of the public that the Commission received substantial sums of money from development partners for the election,” the chairperson continued.
The Commission, on the other hand, did not receive any direct money or financial assistance from international development partners, to be clear.
Indeed, the current Commission’s long-standing policy has been to only accept direct money and cash transfers from the federal government of Nigeria.
He described the support as consisting of technical advice, civic and voter education, meeting organization, capacity-building workshops, and document dissemination.
“On this note, it is appropriate for the Commission to thank development partners and representatives of civil society for their tremendous assistance to the Commission during the 2023 General Election.
This took the form of publication of documents, technical guidance, civics and voter education, meeting organization, capacity-building seminars, and publication of documents.
