The Court of Appeal’s order to hold a flawless rerun of elections in two constituencies within Enugu State has been met with a high degree of readiness, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
On February 3, a rerun of the elections will take place in the Enugu South (Urban) State Constituency and the Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency by INEC.
Chukwuemeka Chukwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for INEC in Enugu State, informed reporters on Friday in Enugu that the commission had sent out over 700 staff members, extra staff members, and 700 armed security guards for the rerun.
Mr. Chukwu gave an explanation of the more than 700 staff members and ad hoc personnel that were deployed, mentioning officers for registration, collation, presiding, and assistant presiding, besides two returning officers.
He declared that in order to guarantee that the transport unions provide the necessary manpower and supplies for the election, the commission had worked out agreements with them and paid them 50% of the total.
As per the REC, the commission has designated three special monitors for each of the three local governments involved, in addition to the usual observers and monitors for the election.
He says it’s obvious that INEC will conduct a smooth, transparent, and credible election that is free of violence and animosity because of the impeccable arrangements.
He declared, “We have security personnel on the ground, so we encourage all eligible voters to come out in force and exercise their right to vote.”
There will be a rerun on Saturday, February 3 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with at least 67,315 eligible voters, according to Mr. Chukwu.
The Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency and the Enugu South (Urban) State Constituency would be rerun, he said, with a total of 173 polling units in 25 Registration Areas, also referred to as political wards.
62,697 eligible voters in total, spread across 24 Registration Areas and 165 polling units, will be present in the Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency, according to the Rec.
Within a single Registration Area (a political ward) and eight polling units, he said, 4,618 eligible voters would be present for the Enugu South (Urban) State Constituency.
The Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Election Result Viewing Portal (IReV) would be used, he said, exactly like in the main 2023 elections.
All eligible voters who showed up by 2:30 p.m. were guaranteed the right to vote, and their votes would be counted, according to Mr. Chukwu.
