Chief Olabode George, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has denounced the judiciary’s ruling that invalidated lawmakers’ election victories.

George was responding to the controversies surrounding the Kano State Appeal Court’s decision.

Remember that the Kano State appellate court declared Gawuna the victor of the state’s gubernatorial election, nullifying the election of Governor Abba Yusuf.
However, confusion emerged when Yusuf’s status as Kano governor was confirmed by the Appeal Court, according to the Certified True Copy, or CTC, of the ruling.

The Appeal Court, however, had ascribed the disparity to a typing error.

In response, George expressed concern that Nigerians were losing faith in the legal system.

The PDP leader expressed concern about the system at a news conference on Monday in Lagos, saying that anarchy would emerge if people lost faith in the third branch of government.

It goes without saying that our democracy is at peril due to certain politicians’ and judges’ unholy ties. On election day, millions of people will turn out, form lines, gather ballots, and cast their votes for the candidates they support. When the results are revealed, everyone will celebrate, but it will only take three, five, or seven judges to overturn the will of the people.

In political cases, the judiciary’s best course of action is to render a decision, and in the event of a tie, to order a rerun without awarding the victory to either party.

“Removing the electorate’s ability to choose political leaders and allowing the judges to declare the winners is wrong. Nigeria will not benefit from this. This is detrimental to our electoral process. It is risky when the judiciary is compromised.
