Lagos-Ibadan Expressway auto crash claims police officer’s life

A police officer attached to Mopol 20 Division, Saleh Sabo, has lost his life in an accident involving a truck, a commercial bus and a car in the Kara area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident occurred at about 6 am on Thursday.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, while confirming the incident in a statement, stated that the truck crashed into a Mercedes Benz Bus while in motion, swerved off the road and fell uncontrollably on a Toyota Hiace bus parked by the roadside.

The LASEMA boss further stated that the officer who was manoeuvring his way back to the office on his motorcycle got trapped by the incident and died instantly.

The statement read, “Following distress calls via its 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency numbers at 0644h, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, activated its Response Team from the Command Control Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.

“Upon the arrival of the LASEMA Response Team at the incident scene, it discovered a Volvo Truck, registration number FKJ 484 YA, laden with goods headed inward Arepo, a Toyota Hiace Bus, registration number BWR 371 XC and a Mercedes Bus, registration number unknown, were involved in a road accident.

“Investigations conducted by the LRT revealed that the truck crashed into a Mercedes Benz Bus while in motion, swerved off the road and fell uncontrollably on a Toyota Hiace bus parked by the roadside.

“A police officer attached to the MOPOL 20 Division, manoeuvring his way back to the office on his motorcycle, got trapped by the incident and died instantly.”

He added that the remains of the policeman were extricated, bagged and taken to the Ojodu police station for further processing.

According to him, the ill-fated truck was recovered with the use of the agency’s sophisticated heavy-duty equipment ‘Super Metro to a lay-by.

“The Toyota Hiace bus was also recovered and towed to the Ojodu Police Station.

“In attendance were the LASEMA Response Team, officers of the Nigeria Police Force and Ogun State traffic officials,” the statement added.
