Lagos State Government, on Friday, announced the postponement of its boat regatta initially slated for Easter Monday, April 1, 2024
The boat regatta is a hallmark event in Lagos’ cultural calendar for celebrating the vibrant maritime heritage of the state while providing a platform for showcasing traditional boat racing and cultural performances.
It usually draws participants from the five divisions of Lagos.
The state Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, in a statement seen on its website, said “the postponement of the event comes as part of the government’s efforts to ensure optimal participation and enjoyment for all attendees.”
The ministry assured all stakeholders and Lagosians that the rescheduled date will allow for better coordination and preparation, promising an unforgettable experience for residents and visitors alike.
The statement partly read, “The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, being the coordinating ministry for the event, apologised for any inconvenience caused by the postponement with a promise that a new date for the Lagos State Boat Regatta will be communicated as soon as possible.”
The ministry, however, thanked all participants, stakeholders, and sponsors of the event for their understanding and flexibility regarding the unanticipated development.
Earlier, the state Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka averred that the Lagos Boat Regatta will be an opportunity for Lagosians to gather and showcase the aquatic splendour of the state.
The commissioner revealed that the state government is committed to the goal of making Lagos the first tourism destination choice in Africa, and the regatta is also an opportunity to promote the beaches and the hospitality establishments surrounding our waters
Also, the Special Adviser on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe noted that the concentration of the Regatta would be on the local fishing communities and the collateral benefits that they can derive from the event.
