Lagos task force arrests 17 for street begging

The Lagos State Environmental Taskforce has arrested 17 persons, including eight minors in some parts of the state for alleged street begging.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who disclosed this on his X.com handle on Tuesday stated that the operation was to maintain law and order in the metropolis.

According to him, the task force carried out the operation on Monday during a patrol on major routes, including Alfred Rewane, Osborne, Alexandra, Bourdillon in Ikoyi, and the Lekki-Ajah express corridor on Victoria Island.

Wahab noted that the arrested individuals were involved in street begging.

He wrote, “The Lagos State Environmental Task Force on Monday, December 16, 2024, monitored and carried out a special purpose operation against persons constituting public nuisance across the metropolis.

“Major routes including Alfred Rewane, Osborne, Alexandra, Burdillon in Ikoyi and Lekki-Ajah express corridor in VI were well patrolled to arrest and ward off destitute and miscreants causing public nuisance in the areas. Seventeen persons including eight minors, involved in the unlawful act of street begging in the hold-ups, were apprehended during the operation.”

He added that all suspects would be transferred to appropriate government facilities in line with the enabling laws.
