Ondo State’s interim governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has taken the oath of office.

This came after 67-year-old Governor Rotimi Akeredolu passed away on Wednesday.

The 12th Chief Judge of the state, Justice Olusegun Odusola, who was sworn in by Akeredolu in February 2023, presided over the swearing-in ceremony.

According to prior reports, Aiyedatiwa will take the oath of office as the state’s governor today (Wednesday) in Akure, the state capital.

It had stated that Aiyedatiwa had left Igbokoda, where he had spent the Christmas and New Year holidays, and was already in route to Akure.

“Today in Akure, Ondo State will swear in Lucky Aiyedatiwa as governor. The Cocoa Conference Hall in Akure is the planned location of the swearing-in. But no schedule has been set for the ceremony yet,” a senior government official previously told SaharaReporters.

On Wednesday, Akeredolu passed away in Germany. Several people responded to the news with condolences.

The governor fought cancer all the way to the end.

After a three-month medical break in Germany, the 67-year-old politician returned to Nigeria in September. He hasn’t taken a leave of absence since President Bola Tinubu ordered him to transfer power to his deputy, Aiyedatiwa.

Acting Governor Aiyedatiwa, his deputy, has been filling in.

Public outcry resulted from Akeredolu’s attempt to manage Oyo State from Ibadan, the capital city, after his return to Nigeria in September.
