The acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, successfully thwarted a plot to remove him from his position, thanks to the intervention of governors elected under the party’s banner.

In the lead-up to the PDP’s 98th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Thursday, discussions within party circles revolved around whether Damagum should continue as acting National Chairman or face replacement.

Having previously served as the PDP National Deputy Chairman (North), Damagum assumed the acting chairmanship role following the court’s suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, in March of the preceding year.

Ayu’s suspension stemmed from a petition filed by PDP member Terhide Utaan, prompted by a vote of no confidence from his ward executives in Benue State.

Despite widespread support for Damagum within the party’s National Working Committee and National Caucus, the ultimate decision was expected from the NEC meeting.

However, the 98th NEC gathering, attended by 353 accredited members, deferred the selection process for Ayu’s replacement, including Damagum for the North-Central region, until August 15.

A reliable source within the NEC, speaking anonymously to reporter, disclosed that the pivotal role played by PDP governors was instrumental in ensuring Damagum’s continued leadership.

The decision was reportedly reached during a PDP Governors’ Forum meeting held at the Akwa Ibom Governor’s lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.

He said, “The PDP governors played a pivotal role in preserving the day and securing Damagum’s position. During their Forum’s meeting, they recognized that allowing the NEC to determine Damagum’s fate amidst the party’s tension could lead to consequences affecting the party’s future.

“They resolved that even if the North-Central region were to nominate Ayu and Damagum’s replacement, it should not occur during the 98th NEC meeting for the sake of peace.

“Instead, they aimed to appease the discontented factions. Additionally, they recommend the revisit of the Rivers State PDP Caretaker committee list to accommodate all interests.

“They appointed former Deputy National Secretary Emmanuel Agbo as the Director General of the party’s Governors Forum to pacify North Central and recommended that Damagum continue in his acting capacity until August 15.”
