In Kwara State, the National Emergency Management Agency started distributing relief supplies to flood victims on Saturday.
The state governor, AbdulRahaman AbdulRazaq, who was represented by his deputy, Mr. Kayode Alabi, flagged off the distribution of the aid supplies.
Inputs for agriculture, food, sewing and grinding equipment, mosquito nets, and mattresses are among the things given to the recipients.
The Federal Government approved the intervention specifically for those impacted by the flood disasters in 2022 and those deemed to be the most vulnerable people nationwide, according to the Director-General of NEMA, Mustapha Ahmed, who spoke at the event in his capacity as Mr. Ephraim Tony, head of Monitoring and Evaluation.
Ahmed described how the 2022 flood calamity wreaked havoc on numerous towns throughout the nation, including Kwara State, where the majority of the population was relocated and their agriculture and crops were entirely destroyed by water.
After the flood, successful search and rescue efforts were carried out in a number of sites, where stranded people were freed and provided the necessary care. Damage and loss assessments were done right away after the flood catastrophe, and federally approved relief supplies were distributed around the states to supplement the state government’s early response.Furthermore, the federal government approved this special intervention based on assessments jointly carried out by the NEMA and State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) to support those affected by the flood and vulnerable persons across the nation in their quick return to normalcy.The selected most vulnerable people will benefit from this intervention by having stronger socioeconomic resilience over time. In cooperation with workers from SEMAs, the State Agricultural Development Project, and other pertinent stakeholders, NEMA personnel were sent out to carry out the target beneficiaries’ verification. Over 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), 660,884 Households in total were verified and selected to get assistance from this unique operation, according to Ahmed.
The NEMA director recommended the recipients to wisely use the supplies given to them in order to better their socioeconomic circumstances.
He expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shetima for all of their assistance in putting the intervention into action.
