Just 24 hours after pleading with Yorubas everywhere to pardon him for his remarks at Iseyin, Oyo state’s Friday inauguration of projects overseen by state Governor Seyi Makinde, former president Olusegun Obasanjo abandoned his wife, Taiwo Obasan.

Taiwo pleaded for forgiveness from “all Yoruba sons and daughters worldwide, fathers and mothers, youths, teenagers, and children, Christians, Muslims, traditional worshippers, all leaders in Yoruba land, and the Council of Kings in Yoruba land” in a report titled “Oyo Kings: A plea for forgiveness.”

Despite having two children with him, Obasanjo responded to the news by claiming that Taiwo is not his wife or a part of his family but rather an impostor.

However, the former President insisted that he adhered firmly, unreservedly, and uncompromisingly to the view that a governor holds the highest office in a state and should, as a result, be shown the proper respect as stipulated in the constitution.

Chief Obasanjo made this declaration in a statement made available to journalists and sent by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi.

Only he, he claimed, was authorized to speak on behalf of the Obasanjo family or those he had appointed to do so.

The statement says, in part, “The attention of former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has been attracted to a statement allegedly made by the president’s wife and bearing the signature of one Ms. Taiwo Martins.

For the record, Ms. Martins is the mother of Chief Obasanjo’s two children, Jonwo and Bunmi, but she is not his wife or a member of the Obasanjo family, it should be said firmly.

“Her claim to be Chief Obasanjo’s wife is bogus and impostor-like. Only Chief Obasanjo or those who have been given that authority speak on behalf of the Obasanjo family.

It should be highlighted that everyone is aware of Ms. Martins’ health status, and everything she says or does has nothing to do with Chief Obasanjo personally or the Obasanjo family collectively.

The former President has clarified that he maintained a clear, unwavering, and uncompromising stance on the idea that a state’s governor is its top official.

“In that case, the respect, protocol, and dignity that the office is entitled to under the constitution cannot be withheld. Any other action would be to mock the office and the constitution.
