At least one driver, Wale Eyinola, has been killed, and another driver, identified as Isa, injured in separate crashes along the Sagamu corridor of the Lagos-Ibadan and Sagamu-Benin Expressways on Tuesday.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the separate incidents to TheNigerian Online on Tuesday evening.
Odutola disclosed that the first incident, which involved a Mack truck with registration number APP 524 XE and a Dyna Pickup truck with registration number LSD 601 YK, occurred at approximately 1:30 am on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, directly opposite Witech Roofing and Pipes Company.
TheNigerian Online learnt that the driver of the Dyna pickup, travelling from Lagos to Ibadan, suddenly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a Mack truck that was parked in the middle lane of the expressway without adequate cautionary signs.
The collision, she stated, left Eyinola with severe injuries, and he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
“The accident caused significant injuries to the driver and damaged the Dyna pickup. Unfortunately, the driver was declared dead at the hospital he was rushed to after the incident.
“The vehicles were towed to the Motor Traffic Division office in Sagamu for further investigation and inspection by the Vehicle Inspection Office,” Odutola noted.
Meanwhile, a separate lone accident on Tuesday afternoon along the Sagamu-Benin/Ijebu-Ode Expressway near Atunrase Slope left the driver, identified as Isa, with serious injuries.
TheNigerian Online learnt from Odutola that Isa, driving a Scania truck with registration number BEN 234 YL and loaded with goods, lost control of the steering, causing the truck to overturn and cross the entire expressway.
Odutola disclosed that the driver was promptly taken to Idera Private Hospital in Sagamu for medical treatment.
“The two accidents are under investigation by the Sagamu Police Division. The policemen at the division are working to determine the causes and prevent further incidents along these highways.
“We advise motorists to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, especially during the busy holiday season,” Odutola advised.
