There was panic in the Adeeke area of Iwo, Osun State, on Sunday, when a tanker carrying petroleum products spilled its content after an accident.

The tanker, coming from the Ibadan end of the Iwo-Ibadan Road, was said to be avoiding a commercial motorcyclist who suddenly veered towards its path, making the driver momentarily lose control of the vehicle, and spill its content.

A resident of the Adeeke area, identified simply as Rasaq, told our correspondent that police operatives, firefighters and personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, deployed to the scene after the incident, immediately cordoned off the area.

“We all ran away after seeing petrol on the road after the accident. But a few minutes later, the police, NSCDC operatives and Osun State Fire Service men came around.

“They cordoned off the scene where the tanker spilled petrol to prevent a fire,” Rasaq said.

When contacted, the Osun NSCDC spokesperson, Kehinde Adeleke, who said the situation was under control, further explained, “Today, an Osogbo-bound petrol-laden tanker fell off the road while attempting to avoid crushing an okada rider with his passengers, who had fallen in its track.

“Although there was no fatality, the tanker spilled its content on the road necessitating the area to be cordoned off by the operatives of the NSCDC, Iwo Area Command and Iwo Division. The situation is relatively under control.”

Also commenting, the spokesperson for the Osun State Fire Service, Ibrahim Adekunle, said the timely intervention put the situation under check.

“Officers and men from Iwo Zonal Command and Fire Service Headquarters, Osogbo are currently at the scene controlling the situation,” Adekunle said.
