The kidnapping of eight National Youth Corps volunteers in Gasau, which is located in Zamfara State, while they were on their way to Sokoto State for national service has been condemned by the House of Representatives.

On Tuesday in Uyo, the capital city of Akwa Ibo State, the chairman of the House Committee on Youth Development, Hon. Martins Esin, issued the condemnation while fielding questions from Reporters.

Esin, a member of the National Assembly who represents the Oron/Mbo/Okobo/Udung Uko/Urueoffong Oruko Federal Constituency, called the incident unfortunate and said it was wrong to subject young people who obey the call for national service to such a traumatic experience. He assured the assembly that the government is working diligently towards the goal of ensuring that the detained individuals are freed.

He revealed that the House of Representatives, which is led by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, is dedicated to passing laws that will ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all Nigerians, including members of the corps.

“It is a very traumatic experience for both the children and their families,” the author of the article said. The government is also not letting up in its efforts to ensure that they are released in a timely manner. Indeed, this new information is very unsettling.

“The Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has strong feelings about issues that border on the welfare and security of Nigerians. Rest assured that the Rt. Hon. Speaker will lead the House through that process in the interest of the nation, whether it requires the enactment of new laws or a review of existing ones to strengthen the security architecture of the nation. This will be done in the interest of protecting the nation.

Regarding this particular incident, I have high hopes that the victims will soon be able to go back to their families and carry on with their service to the country. He gave his word.

In his speech, the lawmaker referred to the National Youth Service Corps as a national institution that effectively serves as a learning platform for the nation’s youth and a veritable bridge-building national institution, arguing that it is imperative that it be safeguarded and maintained in any way possible.

He voiced optimism that the Scheme will survive the current challenges facing the nation and urged Nigerians to protect corp members in their respective domains. He also urged Nigerians to participate in the scheme. He referred to the reopening of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camp in Borno State after it had been shut down for the previous twelve years as a positive sign and a demonstration of how desirable the scheme is.

Esin also praised the leadership of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for their quick response after learning about the kidnapping incident. He assured the NYSC leadership that they would have the support of the House of Representatives in their efforts to make the Scheme better and stronger. Esin added that the House Committee that he chairs would pay special attention to the welfare of corp members, describing them as the nation’s best hope.

He made the assurance that his committee would collaborate with the minister to ensure that the NYSC would undergo necessary reforms and that the interests of Nigeria’s young people would be safeguarded.
