Reps to go after 5,000 companies owing Nigerian Govt N5.2 trillion in unpaid taxes

The Home of Representatives has mandated its committees to analyze the non-remittance of N5 trillion to the Federal Authorities by some companies working in Nigeria.

The choice to go after the tax defaulters adopted the adoption of a movement moved by Esosa Iyawe on Thursday throughout plenary.

The Home resolved to mandate the Committees on Public Account and Finance to probe the non-remittance by the organizations and get well the cash owed the federal government.

Transferring the movement, Iyawe mentioned 5,000 corporations owe the Federal Authorities N5.2 trillion between 2015 and 2019.

He mentioned that there’s one other report stating that in 2021, some corporations did not remit over N17 billion.

“Audit experiences from 2015 to 2019 which revealed authorities companies owing a whole bunch of billions in FIRS taxes comprising underpayments and under-recoveries and over 5,000 Firms and Ministries, Departments and Businesses (MDAs) of the Federal Authorities owing (N5.2 Trillion) (5 trillion, 200 billion, Naira in withholding taxes,” he mentioned.

He said that among the culprits are multinational companies that the Federal Authorities is treating with child gloves, whereas small companies are subjected to a number of taxes.

The movement was taken unanimously with out opposition.

The Home directed the committees to report again to the in 4 weeks.
