Rivers State APC Caretaker Committee Chairman Tony Okocha de governor Siminalayi Fubara to hold local government elections as required by the constitution.
After members of the Inter Party Advisory Committee, IPAC, visited the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, on Thursday, Okocha told journalists that the LGA chairmen’s terms are expiring in a few months.
He said the APC will run in LGA.
“I thought I should also use this opportunity to call on the Rivers State Government to add to our calls for an election because the constitution allows for an election after a certain time,” Okocha said.
“The serving councils’ tenures will expire in a few months, and the law requires reasonable time for party notification for elections, so the process must be implemented.
And we want to show the governor that this is not business as usual.
Indeed, the Supreme Court has ruled that local government caretaker arrangements are abnormal.
“We won’t boycott elections this time; it was a mistake and won’t happen again.”
He trusted the retired Rivers State High Court Justice Adolphus Enebeli-led RSIEC.
