A bus owned by an Anglican church was involved in a collision on Ise-Ikere Road in Ise Ekiti that resulted in three fatalities and numerous injuries of varying degrees.
The majority of the passengers in the car, according to sources, were women traveling from Ise Ekiti to Ado Ekiti to take part in an annual enrolment service.
A few kilometers from Ise Ekiti, according to sources, the 18-passenger bus experienced a somersault after one of its tires burst, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle and crash into a mango tree by the side of the road.
“Three of the women were said to have died on the spot. The deceased included a newly wedded woman. Those who sustained injuries were rushed to hospital where they are currently receiving treatment,” the source said.
The FRSC Sector Commander in Ekiti State, Olusola Joseph, who confirmed the accident, said two persons died instantly, while 10 occupants were injured.
Joseph said that the injured were rushed to a hospital.
On the cause of the accident, the sector commander said, “It was tyre burst that was responsible for the accident involving the 18-seater bus.
“We (FRSC) will continue to appeal to motorists to keep to speed limits. They know the nature of the roads, so they should be very careful while driving on the roads.
“At the same time, they (motorists) should keep to traffic rules and regulations,” the sector commander said.
The Anglican Bishop of Ekiti, Rt. Rev. Andrew Ajayi commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives and prayed to God to heal those injured.
