As of December 2023, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company AEDC owed President Bola Tinubu’s Presidential Villa and 85 other federal and state government ministries, departments, and agencies N47,195 billion in unpaid arrears.
This was revealed by the AEDC in a disconnection notification that was published in a national daily on Monday.
During the time under review, the Federal Capital Territory Authority, the Chief of Defence Staff, Barracks and Military Formations, and the Ministry of Finance were identified by the AEDC as its top creditors.
The Central Bank Governor, the Ministry of Power, the Ministry of State Petroleum, the Nigeria Police Force, the Independence National Electoral Commission, and other MDAs classified as AEDC debtors are among the others.
DisCo claims that the indebted MDAs have been given until February 28, or 10 days, to pay off their payments or risk having their connections cut off.
“The relevant MDAs are hereby given that AEDC shall begin disconnection of service to them on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, following the expiration of 10 days from the day of publication, until they discharge their obligation to pay us their debts,” the business said.

Just four days ago, the Minister of Power stated that the government inherited debts of N3 trillion related to electricity subsidies.
He said that the Nigerian government would have to stop providing subsidies for electricity.
In the meantime, reports surfaced that Nigeria had been experiencing a statewide blackout of energy for weeks.
Adelabu last month attributed the decrease in energy supplies in several regions of Nigeria to gas shortages.
