The petition filed by the former governor of Kano State, Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, challenging Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila’s election as senator on February 25th, was denied by the National/State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal.
The All Progressives Congress senatorial candidate’s petition was not only amateurish, according to Justice R Odogo, who rendered the decision in Kano on Monday, but it also failed to meet the burden of proof.
He stated, “We find no merit in this petition and it is hereby dismissed.”
We confirmed that Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NPP) had won the Kano South Senatorial District poll, which had taken place on February 25, 2023, he said.
The respondent received N200,000 from the tribunal.
The National and State Election Petition Tribunal has, in the meantime, nullified the election of Idris Dankawu, another Kano NNPP House of Representatives member.
According to the tribunal, Dankawu presented a fake West African School Certificate (WAEC) in order to run for the Kumbotso Federal Constituency.

Munir Babba Danagudi, the petitioner, claimed that the respondent had submitted a false Secondary School Certificate in order to gain admission to the Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic in Zaria, Kaduna State.
The judge who rendered the decision, Justice I.P. Chima, agreed with the petitioner and declared Munir Babba Danagudi the winner of the election for the Kumbotso Federal Constituency. He also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to revoke the Certificate of Return that had been issued to the respondent.
